What does Single, Double, and Triple Placement mean?Single Placement - One (1) student per homestay, this also means no other international students from the same ethnicity can be in the homestay at the same time. Double Placement - Two (2) students (From the same group) in one homestay, this also means no other international students from the same ethnicity can be in the homestay at the same time. Triple Placement - Three (3) students (From the same group) in one homestay, this also means no other international students from the same ethnicity can be in the homestay at the same time. Students can share a bedroom but all must have their own beds

Additional important informationReport any family/home changes (New family members, pets or addresses) Maximum of 4 students per household (per the code of practice) If an adult guest is staying in your home, please inform LPSH prior – if the guest is staying for more than 5+ consecutive nights, a police check is required to be submitted prior to the guest arrival. Host Mother must be occupying the home. No student is to be left alone overnight If you are going on holiday or a family emergency comes up, please let us know as soon as you can, we will organise temporary accommodation.

How are students matched with host families?LPSH matches students based on household profiles and preferences to ensure a positive fit.

What is a homestay?A homestay is accommodation provided to an international learner in the residence of a family or household. No more than 4 international students can be accommodated in the same home at any one time. Hosting provides students with a safe, welcoming environment where they can experience New Zealand culture, improve their English, and feel supported throughout their education

How long do students stay?Short-term: 2 nights to 3 weeks Long-term: 4 weeks to a full school year

What defines a Short-term student and a Long-term student?Short-term students may stay anywhere between two (2) nights and three (3) weeks. Long-term students stay from four (4) weeks up to a full school year.

How do I apply to become a host family?Apply online via our website and submit: Police vetting forms (all household members aged 18+) including 2 forms of ID, At least one form must be photographic ID (e.g. Passport, Drivers licence). For further information on what forms of identity are acceptable as proof of identity click here. Two-character references (non-family) Photos of your house, student room, and family Online orientation via zoom Sign a copy of the terms and conditions as per LPSH How long does the application and approval process take? Approximately 6 weeks, including online orientation, home inspection, police checks, reference checks, and an interview.

What are the age ranges of students?Typically 13–18 years old. Occasionally, Groups may include students aged 10–14.

Do I pay for meals when we go out?Yes. If you are dining as a family, you must pay for your student's meal. If your student choses to go out for a meal independently or with friends they are liable to cover the cost of the meal.

What if the homestay arrangement is not working out?Open communication from the beginning is key to a positive experience. However, issues can sometimes arise. If any problems occur, LPSH will work closely with both the student and the host family to find a resolution. If necessary, we have a structured process in place for transitioning students to a new homestay.

How can I update our bank detailsThere are two ways to update your bank information Via your Login Profile on our website Via our Lake Panorama Student Homestays app, the form is located under Resources and named Bank Account Detail Confirmation.

Can I choose which students stay with me?You can specify your preferences and accept or decline student offers prior to student placement.

What if I want to go on holiday? Can I take my student?You must notify your student and provide them with a breakdown of any additional costs. Permission must be obtained from the student's natural parents, agent, and school. The easiest way is by submitting a Student Travel Consent Form via the LPSH App (Resources section). Host Families are still responsible for accommodation and providing 3 meals + snacks per day. (2 week notice period applies)

Is it okay for me to enter my student's room?Yes but respect their privacy. Please knock on their bedroom door and wait for a response before entering.

Can we host students from other agencies while hosting LPSH students?Yes, if they are of a different nationality and same gender as the LPSH student. Please inform LPSH if you accept a student from a different agency or school.

Who does my student's laundry?We ask that you do your students laundry. If they are here long term teach your student how to manage their own laundry.

What does the Homestay Living Expenses payment cover?Bedroom, meals, laundry, internet, power, basic toiletries, and a supportive family environment.

What do I need to provide for my student?Each student must have their own clean, tidy, and comfortable room equipped with: A bed with linen (sheets, pillow, duvet), A heater or fan (season-dependent), A desk, chair, and reading lamp, bath/swimming towels Storage space (drawers and wardrobe) A working smoke detector inside or near the bedroom Additionally, host families provide full board, which includes: Breakfast, lunch (packed lunch on school days), after-school snacks, and cooked dinner 7 days per week Pay for coverage of takeaways when applicable (if family is having as a meal) Laundry services Unlimited wireless internet A caring, safe environment Transport to and from school on the student's first day

I have never hosted a student before. What should I expect?Welcoming an international student is an exciting experience! To support you, we provide a Homestay Caregivers Handbook, which outlines the expectations and responsibilities of hosting. Students also receive a Student Homestay Handbook to help them understand their role in the homestay. Our Homestay Coordinator is available to offer guidance and support whenever needed.

Can I ask students to help with light household chores?Students are encouraged to participate in normal household chores as you would ask your own children. (Dishes, cleaning bedroom, vacuuming, hanging out their own washing etc..)

My student is very sick and needs to see a doctor, where do we take them?If your student needs to see a doctor, please take them to your family doctor, every student has international student medical insurance. Your student should pay for their doctors appointment, make sure they get a receipt which they need to take to the International Director/Dean at their school and who will help them make the insurance claim.

If we go on an excursion, do I pay for my student’s admission?You are not obligated to. If an excursion requires an admission fee, please discuss it with your student — they can pay for themselves. (Rainbows End, Movies, Zoo, Sky Tower, Kelly Tarltons etc..)

Payment Information (April 2025)How much will I be paid? Payment is $360-380 per week, per student. Talk to your homestay coordinator if you have any questions. When will I receive payment? Long-term students: Paid every second Wednesday (in arrears and in advance) Short-term students: Paid on the 4th day after arrival What happens if my student goes on holiday over the Christmas period? A payment of $50 per week holding fee applies instead of the usual weekly payment until their return.

Do we have to cook special meals for the students?No. Students are encouraged to experience New Zealand meals unless they have specific dietary requirements. Please prepare meals for your student as you would your own family.

We have a cabin/caravan on our property, can we host a student?This type of spare room (bedroom) is not acceptable, all bedrooms for students MUST be located within the home.

I have a spare bedroom with a double/queen/king size bed in it, can the double placement students share the bed?Absolutely NOT, but if you have a spare bedroom with two single beds or bunk beds, Yes they can share the same bedroom. We can not accept the following as any for of a bed for our students Mattress of the floor Inflatable Mattress Camp Stretcher Fold Out Couch Bed Trundler Bed that is low to the ground

When does the Homestay Living Expenses get paid?These are paid twice monthly on a Wednesday. This information can be found on our LPSH SchoolAppNZ App on the Calendar - this pay cycle is for Long-term students. Short-term student payments are paid on fourth (4th) day after the student arrives into your home - this payment will be for the full amount of your students stay.

Do I take my student out to dinner, on excursions, and on family trips?Absolutely! We encourage you to include your student and make them feel like part of your family.

What if my student doesn't like the food?Discuss preferences openly with your student, you can work together to find a balance around meals, take them to a local supermarket and contact LPSH if needed for support.

What are the curfews for students?Depends on age and school rules. LPSH provides guidelines.

Do students bring their own spending money?Yes, students are responsible for their personal expenses including tourist attractions. If you believe your student doesn’t have enough spending money, get in touch with LPSH or the schools international director.

Can students drive in New Zealand?No. Students are not allowed to drive or apply for a driver's license while here.

What if I believe my student feels unhappy or depressed?Contact LPSH immediately. Our staff and the school’s International Director will assist.

Can my student travel out of Auckland?Travel outside Auckland overnight requires permission from the international director. Please submit a student travel consent form found on the “SchoolAppsNZ” (2 week notice period applies)

Can my student stay overnight at a friend's house?Advise your student to seek permission from the schools International Director, Due to the code of practice any overnight accommodation must be fully vetted and code compliant.

Who pays for transport?First day: You must provide transport to and from school on the first day (unless they are with a sibling) After that: Students cover their own public transport fares (under 14-year-olds have transport included in the homestay payment) AT Hop card, please assist your student in obtaining an AT HOP card, registering it, topping it up and downloading the AT HOP app. (students cover this cost)

How will my student get to and from school during their stay in New Zealand?As a host family it is your responsibility to take your student to and from school on their first day. We ask that you show them where to catch the bus or train in the morning, and where to get off to get to school, or show them the way they need to walk to school. If your student understands they can to do this from the second day of school. If they seem unsure, please continue to support your student until you feel comfortable that they understand the bus, train or walking route.
